JOB SUMMARY

 The Learning Policy Institute (LPI) seeks an experienced communications project manager to serve as Deputy Director of Communications. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, have web and publication project management experience, be adept at working in a fast-paced environment, have excellent communications skills, and enjoy working in a highly collaborative and highly functional team. The ideal candidate will also have a passion for fostering equity and access to a high-quality education for all children. LPI is headquartered in Palo Alto with an office in Washington, DC. The Deputy Director of Communications will be part of a team of seven, located in both offices, and can be based out of either location.

Reporting to the Director of Strategic Communications, the Deputy Director of Communications will oversee the web and publication production work, coordinate schedules, troubleshoot schedule changes and competing priorities, and ensure deadlines are met. This person will manage a production calendar that encompasses several web sites, online and print publications, webinars and live events, electronic communication, interactive tools, and other communications efforts, ensuring quality copy that communicates content effectively. This position will coordinate with the full team to ensure all pieces are on track to meet deliverable deadlines and to propose strategic solutions when changes are required.

Working with the Director of Strategic Communications, the Deputy Director of Communications will develop and oversee a pool of contractors (writers, editors, web specialists, etc.) who support this work. The Deputy Director of Communications will also support administrative operations in communications, including budgeting. The ideal candidate will have strong writing and editing skills and a keen ability to develop effective messaging.

 RESPONSIBILITIES

 Web and Publication Production Coordination and Communications Operations

Working with the Publications and Web Managers and coordinating with other Communications team members and LPI staff at large, the Deputy Director of Communications will:

  • Ensure quality throughout web and publication production processes to ensure products communicate effectively, are error free, professional, and retain fidelity with the research.
  • Direct the planning, scheduling, and execution of production plans to ensure timely and high-quality output for the wide-ranging and interdependent work produced by the team and contractors—graphics, publications, web pages, online interactives, occasional new websites, electronic outreach, blogs, webinars, and live events.
  • Troubleshoot and direct the team so that scheduled products are produced on time and with high quality. This includes ensuring clear and timely communication with the Director of Strategic Communications, LPI leadership, LPI project and research managers, and the communications staff.
  • Develop and oversee a pool of contractors for proofreading, interactive content creation, and web support.
  • Conduct analytics and impact analysis to help inform priorities and improvements.


Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a communications project management role, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; advanced degree desirable.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized with exceptional time management skills.
  • Comfortable using a range of tools to track and manage workflow among multiple teams.
  • Aware of and interested in using new-media technologies as they emerge.
  • Adept at planning, prioritizing, and working calmly under pressure.
